Bubblegum Crisis
A newly arrived young girl going to her office job is sideswiped by a motorbike rider. She chases it down by cannot catch it -- but is resolved to find the person. So begins Linna's adventure as a Knight Saber. Four women, the mysterious wealthy leader, a popular pop singer, a clerk in the police station and Linna do extra duty as female warriors who are saving Tokyo from monsters running amok.
Tokyo has bee rebuilt after a disastrous earthquake by robots called Boomers. The population once grateful has now become resentful of them. Some of them seem to be going mad and becoming monsters. The police department's responsibility is to stop and destroy them but it is the Knight Sabers arrive first who destroy them resulting in a angry competitive confrontation with the police.
The super flying combat suits made especially for each warrior beats any clothing you could have. The interaction between the women makes up much of the story. Linna's progress from a novice to a seasoned respected fighter is the hero's story. Yes, there is nascent romance, and ruthless corporation behind the scene.
Introductory music and the songs sprinkled throughout are of excellent quality and express the angst of the post-boomer generation. The interaction, responsibilities and attitudes between humans and androids can be compared to human to human interaction.
This anime is part of a collection of Japanese TV episodes on DVD released by Adv Films. I got it from my local library in Oakland CA. Libraries are reaching out to the teen population -- so check them out. You might be surprised at the extensiveness of their collection.
